Indeed, the very first question that came to mind as this presentation unfolded was, how much electricity is consumed by the tracking and control systems? The next was, given that the best places to collect such inputs are also uninhabitable or compete with other essential uses of the land, how much does it cost to distribute and deliver the electricity to where people live and use it?

@YosupMofo I couldn't agree more. The big corporation have sold out the American workers in the name of profit. Why pay an American citizen a "living wage" when they can move manufacturing overseas and pay only a small fraction for their workforce? The corporations could care less if their lust for profit ruins America. As long as they make MORE money and can pay their CEOs outrageous salaries...everything is fine with them.

@nerblebun Believe me, we'll still be here...the biggest worry is if the US goes bankrupt following half-baked "green energy" * right now* regulations. We make the cost of manufacturing so expensive in the US, we have lost much of our manufacturing base already, and more everyday. Now,we're to the point Ancient Rome was when it fell--they imported everything and exported nothing, because they consumed more than they produced, and bankrupted their national treasury. Just like we're doing in USA!

@YosupMofo Until solar and wind power generators are perfected and used widely,yes...the cost per KWH will be greater. But what is the cost to the planet if we continue to burn fossil fuels to generate power ? The planet is at the tipping point NOW.... if we continue on the same old path, the price of a KWH won't matter. There will be nobody here to use it.

@nerblebun Generating electricity by way of wind and solar is simple in concept, but unfortunately, in most locations is not viable. The other problem with these technologies is that they are not, in most cases, cost-effective. The massive unit in Spain is an economic failure. Cost per kilowatt hour is non-competitive. Windmills in California are all subsidized, as cost per kilowatt hour is non-competitive. We could mine Helium3 from the moon too, but at what cost. Gotta keep workin' on it!!

@YosupMofo Your comment has absolutely nothing to do with my statements. I'm retired and have plenty of money so I plan to do nothing but have fun with the remainder of my life. I've also lived OFF the grid for many years. Generating electricity is easy..... getting the polititians out of the pockets of large corporations is not.

@nerblebun There's no law keeping you and your friends from making electricity. So go to it and stop talking about it. Proof of concept--show you can make money from your design, and venture capital starts flooding in.
Solar will never be accepted by the public. Its too clean, its too safe, and the technology is too simple. We only love dangerous power generation technologies that give our babies two heads.

If the budget for the Military,DEA,(which is a dismal failure)and Homeland Security were cut by only 10%...the U.S. would be completely independant of foreign oil.Couple that with our almost constant wind turbin capabilities and we'd stop the Arabs nd Big Oil from extorting billions from the taxpayers.Problem is....Congress is bought and paid for by the Big Oil Companies ,If Americans voted for non-corupt congress instead of American Idol....Maybe we could solve this huge problem.
