  • @JMastatrax I know I'm replying to a very old comment but you can hear the jettison because the mic itself is attached to the SRB. You don't need air to transmit sound, just a medium. The body of the SRB is more than suitable. Imagine you're in deep space and you have your ear snug against the same SRB. Now, get a hammer out and bang on it. You'll hear it. The sound waves will travel through the metal and into your ears. If you're only inches away though, you won't hear it. :)

  • @skinny3715 apparently the mic is in an air contained area so it picks up the sounds of the shell

  • I think since the SRB's are ejected at around 30 miles up, there is enough air to transmit some sound. The atmosphere has no definite edge. I could be wrong, but I think that is why you can hear the breakaway. Excellent video, too cool!
