The festival of great warriors mallar@pallar
This is the 324th Devendrakula Vellalar's Venkodai Chitthirai Thiruvizha which happens in Pudhu Palayam(now Rajapalayam). The Devendra Kulavellalar's of Pudhu Palayam take Lord Ayyanar is procession to the Neerkatha Ayyanar Temple which is 8 miles away from the town.
The village old man dances with a white umbrella with a big thandai in his right leg. The procession is lead by an Elephant carrying the devendra kulam flag followed by Oyilattam, followed by horse dance, doll dance and the umbrella dance by the elder man of the town. After this Lord Ayyanar is brought.
Throughout the procession strict discipline is followed. No once can dance. If so , they will be penalized and should prostrate in front of the village.
More importantly, communal harmony is the key. The Arunthathiyar's are the ones who will carry the colourful umbrellas just behind the Venkodai. After visiting the Ayyanar temple, the procession will head to the temple which belongs to the Aasari's(Carpenter artisans). There is a belief that the Aasari's helped the Devendra Kulavellalars to take out the procession during hard times. They gave a mantra so that they can walk on water. So they are considered as Guru. The aasaris' will honour the DKVs retrospectively by giving clothes to Ayyanar.
