Gaughan's is hard to get anywhere near to, in terms of... emotiona dn everything ... but this is good.

  • Isn't this Gaughan's arrangement......

Besides, does no-one else think that this whole DADGAD thing is getting out of hand? - it's becoming rather passe.

  • @RyGuy913

Listen again, to Gaughan at Celtic Connections say, holding 5,000 folk enthralled in the Royal Concert hall, with just him, his guitar & his "unique" phrasing!

Jim is a wonderful singer/player but even he would concede this is Dick's song!

  • Your having a laugh right??? Its all personal taste, but........... I hear no passion in Jim's voice, and essentially he is trying to replicate Gaughans guitar work. Gaughan different class.

  • Sorry to you Gaughan fans out there, but I just listened to a live version he did in '83, and IMHO Jim Malcolm is much better...FAR superior vocals (I don't see how anyone can prefer Gaughan's), and actually I like Malcolm's guitar work much better, as well. I don't get why everyone on here seems to take Gaughan's version as some sort of holy grail of "Now Westlin Winds." My apologies for ruffling your feathers, haha (pun intended).

  • lovely rendition of a lovely song but my question is this.

when did this melody become the melody that most people seem to know it by? as burns I believe wrote it to the tune of'''' I had a horse, I had nae mair''''!

I think this is by far the better melody as played here by jim and as a few have pointed out by dick gaughan .I know one 70year old who claims it has as far as he can remember been sang to this melody but he may be wrong !anyone shed any light on this.please let me know

  • hi does anyone know where o could get a tab for this songs, thanks mark

  • Really magical. Beautiful, effortless playing and a rich, soulful voice. Jim is the best Scots traditional performer going just now.

    Brilliant.

  • Jim's good no doubt, I might even prefer his voice here! But Gaughan's guitar on this song is definitive, even Jim himself might admit that!

  • Still my favourite version ever, with Dick Gaughan's a close second.

  • Nicely done.
