Tin Whiskers growing on tin-plated steel shell of a D-Sub connector. With additional time in storage, this tin whisker grew sufficiently long to bridge the distance between the shell and connector pin. Electrical short circuit failures from tin whiskers have been documented since the 1940s. To learn more about tin and other types of metal whiskers, visit: http://nepp.nasa.gov/whisker
