Political humorist P.J. O'Rourke draws on his background as both a political libertarian and a devout Catholic to give his takes on the hot-button cultural issues of marijuana legalization and gay marriage.

-----

With more than 1 million words of trenchant journalism under his byline and more citations in the Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations than any living writer, O'Rourke has established himself as a premier political satirist. He is the best-selling author of 12 books, including Parliament of Whores, Give War a Chance, Eat the Rich, The CEO of the Sofa, Holidays in Hell, Peace Kills and On the Wealth of Nations. Both Time and The Wall Street Journal have labeled O'Rourke "the funniest writer in America."

On the eve of the release of his highly anticipated new book, Don't Vote, join us as O'Rourke unleashes his wit on our nation's capital and its larger-than-life inhabitants. - Commonwealth Club of California

  • Are you sure he's a "devout" Catholic? haha. I'm only asking because of his comments after he said he's Catholic.

  • @machinesbreathe IM NOT YELLING I PROMISE THATSJUST HOW I WRITE...

  • @ubermom I'm sure that you feel the same way about birth control and contraception and feel that sex should exclusively be relegated to reproduction and nothing else. Am I right?

  • @CASTANEDA83 WHY ARE YOU YELLING?!?!

  • @machinesbreathe DUDE!!! WHY THE HELL DOES EVERYONE GET SO EXCITED ABOUT ME WRITING IN CAPS??? IT MEANS NOTHING THATS JUST SOMETHING I DO, I WRITE EVERYTHING IN CAPS WHAT THE HECK???

  • @maceain OK. I get it. Anything left of your social mores is automatically declared liberal. I'm a Catholic and I agree with him, but who am I to argue with who I presume could be an Evangelica Flat-Earther? We live in a modern world. Deal with it. Religion isn't rigid because the world changes, so it adapts. If you don't believe in this then you are merely holding your own faith behind. Just look at what happened to the Islamic world. We use their math theorems and numerals! Now look at them!

  • @CASTANEDA83 Well you're typing in all caps so you must surely be more knowledgeable or right than the rest of us. Who am I to argue with such a passionate keyboard commando?

  • WELL MISTER O'ROURKE MOST CATHOLICS DONT REALLY READ THE BIBLE MUCH LESS STUDY IT...THE BIBLE TALKS ALOT ABOUT MARRIAGE NOT JUST SOME LIKE YOU SAID. THE SCRIPTURES SAY AND I CUOTE...FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS MOTHER AND FATHER AND BECOME ONE WITH HIS WIFE!! NOT HIS BOYFRIEND OR HUSBAND OR WHOEVER HE WISHES AND THE FACT THAT YOU DONT KNOW WHETHER HE IS A HE OR A SHE JUST PROVES MY POINT ABOUT CATHOLICS. THE BIBLE SAYS HE CREATED MAN IN HIS IMAGE RIGHT? WELL WAS ADAM A MAN OR A WOMAN???

  • @ubermom not about right and wrong, the law is simply a method of organizing a sustainable society. If you want to right a wrong you have to do it the hard way (the only way)- in this case creating a world in which people choose to not have abortions of their own free will. If you do it forcibly with the law when you couldn't do it with the majority, then that's not government by the people.

  • I think he misses the boat on abortion, though. What place does government have, if not to stop one group of people from slaughtering another group, especially when the group targeted for slaughter is totally helpless?
