Everybody's Valentine: UAW President Ron Gettelfinger

Just two days after General Motors announced its plan to buy off its entire U.S. hourly workforce, some 73,000 UAW members, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger attended the Crain's Detroit Business '€œNewsmaker of the Year'€ luncheon. Gettelfinger earned this year’s honor by negotiating a new labor contract that includes such newsworthy concessions as placing the union in charge of retiree Health Care and giving the Big Three permission to replace workers lost through retirement, termination or buy off with new hires who will receive no pension, no health care and half the wages. One UAW member thought these results deserved more than formal recognition from the business world. They also deserved a Valentine from workers everywhere.

these anti union people are so uninformed its boarderline STUPIDITY. You obviously have no knowledge of the assembly process. US automakers have caught the Japanese in quality, and even surpassed them. Especially now with the recalls. Union workers work their butts off, have dangerous jobs, suffer many repetitive motion injuries, and deserve every penny that they make. They have gave up tremendous amounts of benefits to return the big 3 to profitablity.

I would not let GM management off the hook on this one. They were just too generous in the past, made some horrible engineering decisions, and failed to take the japanese seriously. Look at Ford. They are not in trouble like GM is. GM has some serious internal issues that are not necessarily union-related. Although the UAW worlers at GM definitely have to get real or get out.

GM makes shit because they have union workers that build those cars with no sense of accountability. These complacent union workers do not worry about losing their jobs - so why would they care if they build a bad car? This Union mentality has driven the big 3 into bankruptcy! Now the Unions are forced to change their ways - but its too late!
