@DeaneGoodie Not much. If it's only a hobby for you, you don't need the top of line equipment. You can start with a budget equipment (I built my bike for much less than $800) and work your way up. I assure you it's as much fun with a $10k bike than it is with a cheaper one.
Compared to other adventure hobbies, like sailing, rally and parachuting, where you can spend thousands just to get started...
