Some footage of thrower Bob Humphreys experimenting with the discus technique (circa 1960?). This was part of a study done by Dr. Bob Ward at U.S.C. track.

  • Agreed. But I would never discourage experimentation.

  • thats 3 turns

  • @metalrocker2000

    2-1/2 turns actually.

  • the faster you spin the further it goes because of the momentum come on everyone knows thet!!

  • Yeah, but it doesn't look like his second spin is any faster than the first. Plus it's more opportunities to get in bad positions.

  • the disc is too light to need a second turn. the hammer weighs sixteen pounds, thats why u need 3-4 rotations to build the momentum, but the disc weights less than 5 pounds, andybody over the age of 12 is fast enough to get it up to speed. the the difficulty is getting ur feet in proper place to throw fast, not getting the implement fast enough. two rotations would be counterproductive

  • waste of energy

  • That circle is huge... BIgger than a standard circle

  • proves to waist energy....this is similar to watching kids "wind" the disc bout 4 to 8 times before they begin their throw.

but, if an athlete throws a PR with this tech...more power to them

  • This is the spin I do. Everybody has there own spin they like, but I happen to like this one. My friend taught it to me.

  • i could see doing 2 1/2 spins if the ring was bigger but it isnt so 1 1/12 spin is good instead of cramming ur spins.

  • @metalrocker2000 you must be looking at a different video cause that was two turns.

  • @NorfolkThrower - It's pretty basic. Faster = farther, but the only speed that matters is the speed at the moment of release. Lance appeared to be slow all the way to the end, but then accelerated tremendously. Tom Gage was the same way.

No matter how "good" your technique is, it can't make a slow implement go far. That goes against the physics of the throw.

Hey, keep questioning, keep practicing, and long throws will come to you!

  • @jayess to hell does hammer purely rely on speed, if it did it would be easy! lance deal (thrower from the early 90s) was extreamly slow yet had very good technique, which allowed him to throw a long way.

  • @DivaFH and circle
