Huddie Ledbetter's "Sylvie", as recorded by Harry Belafonte with The Norman Luboff Choir, remains a vastly under-rated musical legacy, with the arrangement contributions of Paul Campbell. Duke University's Tri-Delt member of our Homecoming Court, Anne Walsh, introduced me to this song and accompanied me in recording it. Squeaking chair at the beginning and a few ad hoc contralto overtones aside, I think she did a wonderful job. If this song were wrtitten for a femme, she could have rendered a wonderful lead vocal version herself.

  • Great work! Loved it! 5/5

  • Thanks, Dean. I'm just trying to get Annie off the hook. All the musical faux pas anomalies in this one are mine. Gratefully, John

  • Maybe the tape is stretched, but it sounds as if you changed the water to..... whine? It is haunting though, in a good and reminiscent kind of way....Ruminating George

  • It's me that's stretched on this one, George, not the mylar. Check out Belafonte's bone-dry plea on this, though. 'Tis a classic! Hydratedly-challenged John

  • Excellent, both of you. The only other version I've come across is Lonnie Donegan's upbeat one. Have yo heard it?

  • No, but I've heard other songs by Lonnie, and they are very good. Do you have his version? Regards, John

  • nice job

  • Annie was always a little reticent about singing; I was also a little closer to the Shure microphone than she. Besides, I needed the water more than Annie did. Thirsty John

  • Very pleasant...sort of a lullaby here. Your friend has a sweet voice but is a little overpowered by you, John. Nice blending, however. I need to drag out Leadbelly to hear that great 12 string guitar he played. Nice video.
