My son Alex's Eastern Black Swallowtail caterpillar never did attach itself to anything for pupating, so when it began just lying there, we got worried that maybe it had a parasite in it ready to hatch out. But, hooray!, that didn't happen. Instead, it writhed around on the floor of its habitat shedding its last instar skin and revealed its chrysalis skin to us. It was pretty neat, albeit freaky, to watch.
i have been looking for caterpilars for my intier life and never found one where do you get those

Black Swallowtails love parsley, dill, and carrot tops. If you plant any of that in your yard, watch out! You'll very likely get caterpillars (USA from Midwest out to east coast).
