I had the good fortune to meet Eubie Blake back in the 1960's when he showed up one night to listen to his friend Don Lambert play stride piano. Mr. Blake was not only a very gifted person but a great human being who encouraged others by applauding their efforts and sharing in their joy of accomplishment.

Regarding Eubie's age: The single greatest enemy of the human soul has to be statistics! Here is a man with a spectacular contribution to world music and a singular contribution to American music and people want to obsess over whether he was 96, 98 or 100 at this performance ! That's about as irrelevant to the greatness of the man and his contribution, as tits on a bull. Get a grip people; separate the wheat from the chaff, and develop a sense of priorities that are worthy of a human being.

Why are people still spreading inaccurate information about the man's age? If you know he wasn't 98 when this performance took place, then it makes no sense to tell people he was, unless you think him being thought of as a 98 year old man was of any great importance.

@Harmonyww To those of us that appreciate this man's unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his age at this performance is entirely irrelevant! He could be 75, 85, 95 or 105! Those of you that do not appreciate the music and want 'football announcer style' numerical statistics, please start an email thread elsewhere and duke it out to your heart's content! Cheer up, Monday night football is starting soon and you can feast on gobs of meaningless numerical statistics all winter long !

@dnworks If it's irrelevant, why do you have such a big problem with correcting it? Why even note his age at all if you don't think it matters? Of course I appreciate his music, as I do with all ragtime performers and composers. I'm not too keen on disinformation though.

@Harmonyww If you watch the video, you will notice that the person introducing Eubie on the stage refers to him as being 98 years old ... I keep my information consistent with the video it accompanies. With respect, subject is closed.

According to Wikipedia he was already dead for two years at the time of this recording if he was 98.

What a dapper gent this guy was. He wrote some great tunes and he had style all the way with a talent that few possess.
