The rauschpfeife is a Medieval woodwind instrument and was very popular in its time. Definitely meant for outside playing because it is very LOUD!
The rauschpfeife is a double reed instrument. The reed is covered by a windcap. So you don't blow directly on the reed but on the mouthpiece.
You have to maintain a lot of pressure in the blowing for the tone to sound good. When the pressure lowers the tone sags :^) I play a soprano rauschpfeife by Moeck.
This is the most difficult instrument I have played so far... but it is fun.

Bravo! This video is close to my heart! In the summer when I'm not teaching, I work as a custodian. I stay after work to practice tekerölant (Hungarian hurdy gurdy), also a VERY loud instrument. I can't play at home because my wife would eventually throw me and my crazy instruments to the curb! She is more than a little uneasy that I am listening to Rauschpfeife now. Even so, I want to hear more. Where did you buy it? Who do you play with? How do you learn?

Not the basement, it is a factory where I can practice after working hours! In the basement of my appartment building I would still be a nuisance to my neighbors! :^)
