Fancied a go at Banjo. Thanks to Tom Bracken at Coventry CCE for loan. Audio tracks are at http://www.myspace.com/nealpointon and http://www.myspace.com/trifolk. This is four days after getting it. Fingering is same as for fiddle which makes it a bit easier. Still need to master pick rather than finger ornamentation though.

  • Coke in the Hearshall Inn in Craven Street every Tuesday

  • hey there, fair play with the tune good job,is that an oakwood tenor your playing??

  • Its a fairly good quality fair priced Samick banjo. I think Youtube might be disguising the tone a bit as I have recently heard a Vega White Lady and although not bad this one is nowhere near.

  • nice job, wonder if its really that easy for a fiddle player to take up banjo or if you just make it look that way.

  • Neal also plays a bit of guitar, so he was used tothe frets and finger stretches. Like any instrument, it still took a fair bit of practice to get the tune anywhere near right though. He has been adapting some of his fiddle tunes, but some just dont seem to fit the banjo.

  • You had a right go with the banjo. Will you be able to practice more with the banjo? I know you do so well with the fiddle. You are right, many people don't realize that the fingering for the banjo and fiddle are very much the same. It seems that you truly enjoy your music. Way to go!!

  • very good,. well done,. what make is the banjo,. mine is a vega vintage clear skin looks a bit like ur one,.nice sound

Im a fiddle player myself, though a bit of a beginner, and because its the same tuning it is a lot easier to play coming from the fiddle, the same with the mandolin. Although you do have to get used to it a bit, especially the stretching :O :L

  • lovely tempo for stepping it out for me anyhow.

  • Nice playing,I play the Tenor banjo, the accordion and the mandalin, but the banjo and the accordion mostly,I can play the Boys of Bluehill too,its a very easy tune to play.

  • good to hear a hornpipe played like a hornpipe!

  • beautiful playing ,excellent tempo

  • I also play banjo and fiddle, and yeah, some tunes are better played on one or the other, however there are both fiddlers and banjo players out there that could play these tunes like masters. For me starting out on banjo the hornpipes were easiest
