Hurling Rules

Hurling pre-dates recorded history. There is archeological evidence of the game being played in ancient Ireland 2000 years ago. The sport was formalised when the rules of the modern game were drawn up in 1884 with the foundation of the GAA. The greatest and most prestigious prize in Hurling is the inter-county All-Ireland Championship.

  • whats the scotish sport called

  • shinty

  • Mon the shinty! we've been beaten you guys for a few years now?

  • yeah the last few years now. the ireland panel is made up mostly of tier 2 players though. it's about time we showed the series the respect it deserves and fielded our top teams. this isn't sour grapes fair play to Alba, but it needs the proper support of the gaa, not a token team. Scotland have shown they are no messers and care about the series, the GAA need to step up to the mark.

  • Very cool! How many people have broken a finger or arm when going for a grab, eh? Thanks for the info.

Have a Question. How do you win? Most goals? Most points? Are goals worth more that Points? i am unclear.

  • Whoever has the most points wins. A goal is worth 3 points.

  • Pretty bad ass ...None of these guys are pros right ?? They just play for regional respect is what ive heard

  • As a Dub, I obviously spend more time watching the bigger ball, but I think hurling is far superior to football. Hurling is the most exciting sport to watch. It's not about who does or doesn't wear head gear/protection. It's about the sheer speed and intensity of the game. End to end stuff.

I'd NEARLY sooner have the Dubs win a SHC Leinster title than for the footballers win Sam. (I did say 'nearly'!)

  • If my history is correct I believe Shinty was brought to Canada by immigrants from Alba (Scotland) where it became Shinny (Pond Hockey)...then later Ice Hockey.

Either way...I've played both shinty and hurling over here in America and I love them both...plus I enjoy playing gaelic football.

  • @SaiKoSeSu Rugby is pro(europe). And the world cup is being broadcast on NBC in September in the US. As a rugby player in the U.S. I can assure you the sport is growing here. Some U.S. Universities are even starting to offer Rugby scholarships. All in due time.

  • cork 2 bring home the liam mccarthy cup this year!

  • Thanx so much for expanding my knowledge.

  • @SaiKoSeSu Also, just to make it clear I am aware of the difference between American soccer and true football/futbol.

  • @Wolfhowl1329 *sigh* As an American myself I have to say I HATE "football." Mark Sanchez is kinda hot (yeah, I'm a girl) sure but I hate the NFL. It's boring and pointless, and the dumbest people I know like it, which doesn't help my opinion of it. I'd much rather have games like this and Rugby become professional I'd definitely tune in.

  • ps

    nice video

  • dude i wish i knew about this sport as a kid. hockey, soccer, rugby and baseball all at once. can you watch this online live?

  • I saw a Caid match when I was in Kerry a few years ago, I also saw a shinty match on Skye during that trip. I have yet to watch a hurling match. It makes me proud of my celtic family to watch a game ( my father was northwestern scottish, and my mother was eastern irish).

These sports help keep our Celtic identity.

I was born american yet I'm more taken by foreign sports (well foreign to we americans), more then american sports (other then baseball since my brother played minor league baseball).

  • @DeathToISLAM666 Inter county hurlers would easily match pro footballers for fitness!! And turning pro would destroy the sport!! It would completely kill the small club!! Transfers would follow and then it'd be as shit as soccer!!
