Staten Island Hate Crime: Mexican Man Beaten and Robbed (www.WhatSaidFred.com)

Police are investigating a possible bias crime in Port Richmond, Staten Island that left one victim hospitalized on Monday and spread fear through the local Mexican-American community. NY1s Mara Montalbano filed the following report.

Early Monday morning, a surveillance camera captured on Port Richmond Avenue in Staten Island four men running off. Police suspect they assaulted a 26-year-old Mexican man walking home from work.

Investigators say the group beat him with a baseball bat and robbed him of his wallet and cell phone while yelling anti-Mexican slurs.

Detectives canvassed Port Richmond Avenue on Wednesday afternoon looking for leads.

The crime has left the local community on edge, and many neighbors were too scared to speak with NY1 on-camera.

"I'm scared. I can't be here at a certain time of night because I'm scared of something happening to me or my family," said one local woman who wished to remain anonymous, who said she knew the victim and went to visit him in the hospital.

While officials say the victim is in stable condition, the anonymous source said his injuries were extensive.

"It's kind of ridiculous that people can have such a heart and do that to somebody, because we're all humans, you know?" she said.

Police have classified the crime as a bias incident, and if that is true, it is not the first time the people of Port Richmond have become the targets of bias crimes.

Back in August 2008, police say Joseph Papapietro drove his truck into store fronts along Port Richmond Avenue because he was angry at Mexicans living in the community.

Locals said they thought they had moved past that and said they believe the latest attack was more than just a robbery.

"Why would one use a bat to beat someone if you were just going to rob them? You obviously intend to cause harm," said Terry Troia of El Centro de Hospitalidad.

Police say the victim told them two of his assailants were black and a third was Hispanic. He could not tell the race or ethnicity of the fourth attacker.
