This electromechanical motion capture system was developed as master's thesis by Daniel Saidi and Magnus Åsard, with the goal to investigate the minimum cost of a full-body exo-skeleton-based motion capture system.

The entire system - including all physical components, like PVC pipes, aluminium and soft-plastic sheets, shielded cables and elastic textiles as well as a cheap Linux-server
and server and client software - ended up costing us $950.

This video shows the system in live action, although some measure points are slightly miscalibrated.

  • Hey,

I wrote a loooong reply to you, in which I wrote about the approach and a lot of details about why we did stuff in certain ways, what could be improved etc. etc...but it seems to have been flushed away. Quite frustrating!

However, glad you like what you see. It is quite an old prototype, but I believe it proved that it was possible to achieve real-time tracking, even with really crappy hardware.

The system is outdated, but can be improved in many ways. Let me know if you'd be interested.

  • Ha ha ha, yeeep. But hey, it was only a POC.

  • Hey folks I really really could use motion capture like what you have created here. Congrats on your live action system. How much would you folks charge to get me the software and the specs for the needed hardware? I use 3ds MAX. Is the program capable of recording motions of two subjects at once?

  • Very err....stiff....
