What is a forged seam? Were boilers built with forged seams? At one time they were. John Rimmasch takes a look at the original boiler from his 1904 Cagney Class D locomotive and shows us the evidence of a forged seam in the boiler. This forged seam, among other things, prevented this boiler from ever being used again.

Seamless tube does not have a seam at all. That tubing is created by piercing a hole into a solid round bar of steel.

very interesting, John...I have seen a lot of butt strap boilers with gas welded seams that had the straps rivited on for the structural strength. As far as I know, no traction engine maker used a forged or fusion welded seam.
