A little battery engine, built in 48 workshop hours (yes, forty-eight!) It is powered by two 12-volt car batteries. The driving force is a 24-volt windshield wiper motor!

More about building this little workhorse here: http://www.saunalahti.fi/animato/3003/3003bg.html

In this video, a neighbor's kid is running the engine, with his little brother as passenger. Note how the removable seats on the small, simple cars provide safe riding for younger and older kids alike, by simple re-positioning according to passenger size.

My website has a lot more info about backyard railroading, including building Live Steam engines:

  • How many hours can it run on a single charge? How much weight can it pull? Can it pull adults as well?

    Thanks

  • More than six hours on a charge. Three kids, or one adult. My track has quite some grades. On totally flat ground, I'd say 6 kids or two adults, easily.

  • Wow thats great... thanks for sharing... how long is ya mini railway bud?

  • It's almost 150 meters, i.e. 450 ft.

  • @Chay714 - No, it's (very loosely) based on a Finnish prototype.

  • Now this is cool! I'm planning a 'speeder' type loco, that I can ride on.I have a Battery-Electric loco (24volt) which I am looking to copy. However this intrigues me! I have seen the website, and it is certainly interesting what can be achieved with little time, effort and money...

  • Ser ut som om rampehvalpen har kjørt tog før...
