Il Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan
deve il suo nome a una danza rituale
cinese, il Cloud Gate appunto.
I ventiquattro ballerini si sono formati con
il Tai Chi Tao Yin, la meditazione, le arti
marziali, i movimenti dell'Opera cinese,
la danza moderna e classica, la calligrafia.
Il risultato è una sapiente fusione
di tecniche di danza e principi teatrali
orientali e occidentali. Fondatore del
corpo di ballo nel 1973 è il coreografo
Lin Hwai-Min che, in Songs of the
Wanderers (1994), evoca il gioioso ricordo
del viaggio a Budhgaya, coinvolgendo
il pubblico in un grande rituale
di purificazione. Un'opera sull'ascetismo,
la mitezza del fiume e la ricerca della
quiete, appoggiata su un palcoscenico
stratificato e modellato da tonnellate
di riso.
Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre owes
its name to a Chinese ritual dance, the
"Cloud Gate". The company's twenty-four
dancers are skilled in Tai Chi Tao Yin,
meditation, the martial arts, Chinese
Opera, modern and classical dance and
calligraphy. The result is a clever mix of
dance techniques and Eastern and
Western theatre. The company was
founded in 1973 by choreographer Lin
Hwai-Min, who, in Songs of the Wanderers
(1994), evokes the cheerful memories of
Buddha's trip to Bodh Gaya, leading the
audience into a great purification rite. It is
a work on asceticism, on the peaceful
flowing of a river, on the research for
quietness, while the stage is modelled into
a landscape by tons of rice.
