  • When measuring diode ripple, should the multi-meter be set to ac voltage or dc voltage?

  • Good question. You should use an Oscilloscope to measure ripple. Set the scope on AC, this way you're blocking out all the DC. Ripple on alternators is always DC or Direct Current with an AC component. So, block the DC, expand the voltage scale on the scope and concentrate on the AC part.

    It is very difficult to use a MM to determine alternator ripple. Most automotive alternators use 3 diodes. Using the scope and a little practice you'll quickly spot a defective diode.

  • Transient voltage. It's a process patented by Medtronix to test battery condition without placing a load on it.
