Hold that Tiger !TIGER IN THE ROUGH
Oh Tiger, Whoa Tiger!
You the hunter, now the hunted.
The predatory ways of media voyeurism
Have set you off your course
The tiger was hungry
But so was the public
For news of your deeds
The heel of Achilies
His Weakness
The papparazi got the scent of the tiger
and sent their hounds baying
Your wife has been injured, your children abandoned
Those two robbers: Lust and Greed
Have stolen your prowess
A wonderful performance. The first part has the fluid grace of the opera melodies Jelly Roll Morton used in Tiger Rag, and the unhurried simplicity of this part reminds me of Gottshalk's evocation of French children's songs in pieces like La Savane. Then comes the continuous augment and drive of the classic Tiger Rag. I've enjoyed Tiger Rag for a long while and thought that there were no new treasures in this piece, but Frank has illuminated Tiger Rag all over again.
