Sugar Drop is a work of fiction based on a real medical phenomenon. Whilst medically accurate, it uses cinematic devices to both enhance and exaggerate the subject material. It has been written with the express intention of raising awareness of diabetes related complications amongst the general public, as well as encouraging diabetics to discuss issues such as hypoglycemia more openly. It is not the intention of the filmmakers to cause alarm or distress to patients with diabetes, their friends or family. Under no circumstances should the following groups of people watch the film or trailer: Individuals under the age of 18; Individuals who suffer with diabetes related mental health issues (anxiety/depression etc.). A comprehensive range of information relating to diabetes can be found on the Diabetes UK website (www.diabetes.org.uk).

..........

In the winter of 1922 the Indianapolis drug firm Eli Lilly and Company perfected a technique to mass produce large quantities of purified insulin. This breakthrough heralded a revolution in the treatment of Diabetes and saved millions of sufferers worldwide from a slow and painful premature death. Whilst insulin therapy allows patients to live a relatively normal existence, an excess of insulin in the body can lead to a state known as Hypoglycaemia in which the level of glucose in the blood drops dangerously low. Without rapid intervention, this can lead to anxiety, disorientation, hallucinations, unconsciousness and eventually death.

Almost ninety years after the perfection of insulin production, university lecturer and Diabetes sufferer Ben Hopewell is, by his own admission, comfortably removed from the horrors faced by previous generations of Diabetics. Effortlessly negotiating a world centered on fatherhood, a fulfilling marriage and a career he still loves, nothing could be futher from Ben's mind than the mental condition that has left his existence dependent on an ability to administer a precisely calculated dose of insulin each day.

One evening, after deciding to work late, Ben's naivety is brought into sickening focus when he accidentally miscalculates his dosage only to find himself trapped and alone in a lift. Unable to reach the outside world, Ben's blood sugar levels slowly begin to drop and Ben's anxiety and confusion eventually descends into hallucination and madness.

Sugar Drop is the first part of the Bitter/Sweet Triology
