In either of the campaigns, there is no need to grind to max level, there is no need to grind for some legendary item or armor, although there is still an option to do that if you like the prestige.

Depending on the campaign you have, the max level is fairly easy to attain.
In the Prophecies campaign/Original, it takes maybe a week, although you are constantly thrown into missions so you don't feel like you are grinding. The missions are all built in such a way that by the time you reach the mission by doing main storyline quests, your level will be appropriate for it.
In factions, you gain max level in about a day or two
In nightfall, maybe 3-4 days?
