They work hard, are highly skilled and deserve every penny they get paid. None of it is a * Busman's Holiday*

Pay is relative..when people say its a high...its shit for the work you will do, its hard, cold frightening dangerous and really underpaid.
Only for men without nerves or imagination.

Not these days. On proper 28 days in sat you`ll get like 500-600 pounds a day. Of course depend on contract you`ve got. But in general that`s it. Im doing this for living and living of this comes hard now. That`s why I`m working offshore on different jobs-shame for qualified diver but what can you do.
-
Who can afford them? The commercial offshore air divers of course - shit, we have three guys doing their sat course right now and several more booked-on for late in the year.
-
As it stands now sat divers in SE Asia are earning more than N Sea guys AND not paying 60% tax - zero in fact. So Asia is where its at IF you can get work there that is.
-
Once they get out working, the pay is over a grand per day, so the cost of the course can be quickly recovered.

The sat course is around £18,000 and pretty much everyone has to pay that for himself now. Companies don't need to send divers on courses as there are so many waiting in line for courses and work.
Who can afford those courses?

I'm guessing that some are financed by companies or agencies, but certainly some are self financing. Its easy enough to get a loan to pay for the course on the basis you'll be earning a lot of money when you have finished! Salaries for saturation divers in the north sea are very high.

falcon - who are the divers from??

The divers were undergoing saturation dive training at The Underwater Center, in Fort William, Scotland. They are therefore already qualified commercial divers with at least 1 years experience, and they come from all sorts of places.
