An overrated film.
Really, just a standard and mediocre melodrama, not a truly realistic view of military life, the attack on Pearl Harbor is not intrinsic to the story,
seems like it was added at the end to provide punch.

i agree in part. The movie was a big departure from the novel .sugar coated the military reality.but i thought i was great movie making

Burt Lancaster = total badass!
It would take about 10 of today's male leads to equal one Lancaster. The guy was a true athelete, stuntman, and actor. I'd like to see "The Rock" or "Vin Diesle" do half of what he was able to do. All without the use of steroids, CGI, or a souped up car to act as eye candy to make up for lame acting. I miss Lancaster, Palance, Lee Marvin, Bronson.
Today's male actors are just soft.

In actuality George Reeves part of Sgt. Stark was cut from the picture after a pre-release showing of the movie where the audience was said to have been yelling "Superman!" upon seeing him,or so the story goes (obviously he IS in the movie after all).Sad as Reeves was a good actor and playing the TV super-hero doomed his career in movies (no disrespect to the man or TV series).

I strongly disagree. This movie was way ahead of its time. One of the all time greats.

Burt Lancaster was a WW II Veteran who saw action at Anzio. In real life nobody messed with him.

Yeah, but in this scene, Ernest Borgnine shows he has what it takes. You forget Montgomery Cliff, Frank Sinatra, and Lancaster...you focus on that animal, Borgnine, what makes that man tick?? you ask yourself, he is savage, macho, insane.... this provided the kind of drama you see in future movies with Eastwood, Stallone, even Schwarzneggar...the idea that the brute is the object of our hate...and our attention...fascinating. Oh yeah, who put that stupid flag over the chinaman??? humorless
