PowerMacG5 Fan Issue

Pete's Mac got the screen of death by just sitting there, and then his fan started making a loud fan noise, like it went into overdrive. Too bad the mike from the camera didn't catch it. Check out this thread:

On a Power Mac G5, if you see a RED LED light inside next to the Power button, it means that the side cover is off, and the sensors dont se that it's on. Because of the cover being off, the air from the outside is being pulled in, making the computer think it'll overheat. To protect itself from overheating, the fanskick up.

I have an Early 2004 PM G5 dual 2.5GHz with 4GB Ram and a 9800 vid card. It never really seemed loud till I got my Early 2008 Mac Pro 8 core. The Mac Pro is nearly silent. Now the G5 seems really loud. Put a brand new 250GB Maxtor in it and installed 10.5.8 on it fresh. Much less fan noise now. You also need to reset the Thermal Controller.

As it crashes the OSX system fan speed controller witch adjusts the fans speed, in combination to the systems units temperature sensors.

if it detects that a sensor isnt readable it puts the fans in protect mode.

since it cant know if the unit is cold or hot.

its better to cool them too much than frying them.

its called the jumbojet.

uh after you restart, it will be fine, macs don't have a screen of death
