I am curious as to ask why Karpov resigned; he could perpetually check the king resulting in a three-fold repetition draw or 50 moves without a piece being taken draw. Could someone get back to me as this doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

Black cannot give more checks
If 45 .... .Rc4 + 46 .Kxc4, Ke5 and white wins
If 45 .... .Rd3 + 46 .Kxd3, Ke5 and white wins
Then it has not stalemated
With other plays white will win
You can verified with some program of analysis of chess

no it was a win, garry won, only if he takes the rook where it checked its a stalemate, but once the king moved farther down theres no more stalmate chances i think karpov resigned.
