IF a student "Comes Out" to you, be honored that they have put that kind of trust in you. You must be a kind person who does not allow hate or bias in your classroom.

Understand the statistics.

1. 50% of all gay teens consider suicide. 30% Try.
2. 30% to 50% of all successful suicides may be attributable to sexuality issues.
3. Because every school has a history of negative behavior towards gay people. Teachers are people too, some can be kind and helpful, others may be ignorant and biased. Some teachers are VERY supportive, some saving lives of Suicidal Teens!
4. People are rarely punished at schools for Biased Language. (Calling people Queer, Homo, Fag etc.)
5. Statistics show, that if you have 8 to 10 friends, probably 1 is Gay, Lesbian or Questioning. That means that in every class there are probably 2 - 3 homosexual or "questioning" students, and that there are about 150 to 200 other gay and lesbian people at the average school of 2000 (Teachers, Students, Administrators, Custodians etc.)

Are you suicidal and NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE NOW?
The Trevor helpline: (866) 4u-trevor

Established in 1998 to coincide with the HBO airing of the award winning short film "Trevor", hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, The Trevor Helpline is the only national 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention hot line aimed at gay and questioning youth.

The Trevor Helpline is geared toward helping youth in crisis, or those wanting information on how to help someone in crisis. The Trevor Helpline is maintained by two call centers, our partners at San Francisco Suicide Prevention and The Trevor Project own Los Angeles Call Center. Helpline calls are handled by highly trained counselors and are free and confidential.

  • ; ) very cute~!

  • This is a great resource. I think the most important thing is, no matter what, do not have communication with the parents if this issue should arise, and I'm glad to see that you emphasized that.

  • @Somethingproductable child god loves you no matter what god spreads love not hate when a political or religious group or a rabbi or a priest or preacher say's " all people of gblt are going to hell" people that say that are ignorant and stupid they know nothing they say things like that ae idiots. people like that have low slef esteem and do it to be self rightious and idiotic. don't be afraid to come out and be yourself in public don't let the haters get you down
