Children in the world's poorest countries are extremely vulnerable to the effects of increasing global poverty. Disease and hunger take a heavy toll. Many who do manage to survive are robbed of their childhoods and forced to work, often in terrible conditions. The United Nations estimates that one-sixth of all the world's children go to work. Tony Birtley reports from Bangladesh.

  • working 16 hours a day horrible!

  • @yaalimola1 Then stop shopping at Wal-Mart, the Gap, Old Navy and H&M - and join campaigns against their Satanic practices in Bangladesh (National Labor Committee, UFCW's Wal-Mart Watch, Jobs with Justice, Labour Behind the Label, United Students Against Sweatshops). Urge your congressional representatives to pass "The Decent Working Conditions and Fair Competition Act" which would prevent the imports of goods that violate the labor laws of the countries from which they proceed.

  • @KakTJ Blame the multinationals, their tax free zones, their rock bottom wages while reaping billions in profits and the military envoys that back them. They are the only ones who can invest outside capital and raise living conditions. The best way to invest this capital is to increase wages. That is the only way to build domestic markets - otherwise they are literally slaves for the buyers overseas. Fuck the multinationals. Many of these people were better off as subsistence farmers.

  • @urucharrua They have children so that when they get too old to work, their children and grandchildren can support them. In a traditional society, children would help their parents with agricultural work. In cities, unfortunately, the children end up in factories or other jobs. Unfortunately, it is a vicious cycle as things will be the same, if not worse, for their children's generation. Education might be a way out for these children and their families but unfortunately, poverty prevents this.

  • i feel so bad for these kids :(

  • i feel bad for this kid

  • Poor or not they should all be attending school. Where's the President of India who can change this? Why must the poor divide from the rich. It is not fair!!!

  • Because they can send those children to work, to bring home money, and exploit the child. What else is a 5 or 9 year old suppose to do or go?

  • i fail to understand why people in this countries continue to have children when there aware of the economic situation of there countries
