Big Ol' Toboggan

I clearly remember when I was a kid
When winter came calling the things we all did
The snow forts, the snowballs, the fights that ensued
But no one got hurt bad and no one got sued
One, two or three scarves, a toque and a hood
Three pairs of socks and a big pair of boots
Mitts that were pinned to the sleeves of my coat
A forty-pound kid with eighteen pounds of clothes

We'd get such a sting on the ears and the nose
The snow was so deep and the lake always froze
A little too cold and the clothes never fit
But it didn't much matter when I was a kid
Our skating was bad; we were useless on skis,
(We just couldn't seem to stay clear of the trees)
But we had the best thrill there was to be found
'Cause we had the biggest toboggan around

CHORUS

What's still the best cure for midwinter blues?
When I've got the choice to make, here's what I choose:
Fly through the front gate and pump up the heart rate
Five kids 'n three dogs 'n right out of our noggin's
That big ol' toboggan was king

While most played at being a sports king or queen,
A Jean Beliveau or the next Nancy Greene,
Athletic young heroes all of our neighbourhood,
And we were just bent on bein' Gilles Villeneuve
Unmotivated was ev'ryone's read
Voted the most likely not to succeed
But we were all fearless, 'n to offer up proof
We launched the toboggan right off of the roof

CHORUS

What's still the best cure for midwinter blues?
When I've got the choice to make, here's what I choose:
Fly through the front gate and pump up the heart rate
Five kids 'n three dogs 'n right out of our noggin's
That big ol' toboggan was king

The bow split as we hit the roadway below
'N sped ninety yards down a steep icy slope
Five racing hearts stuck in five skinny throats
Ridin' a rocket and goin' for broke
Mitts, scarves, 'n hats, dogs 'n kids ev'rywhere
The toboggan was toothpicks rainin' down from the air
We all shook our heads, someone spat out a tooth....
Then it was out with the saucers and back up the roof

CHORUS

What's still the best cure for midwinter blues?
When I've got the choice to make, here's what I choose:
Fly through the front gate and pump up the heart rate
Five kids 'n three dogs 'n right out of our noggin's
That big ol' toboggan was king

  • @splake1944 Thanks for the note and nice words. Nope, no plans to record again. You never know though.

  • So have you put this one on an album yet?

Saw you perform it in Orangeville a few years ago when you were doing you're Gordon Lightfoot tribute show with Jory Nash and Aengus Finnan. Great show and definitely remember this one bringing the house down.
