No. A potentiometer is just a variable resistor. PWM is quite something different.

No silly. A potentiometer (essentially a resistor) drops current. Whereas PWM is pulsing voltage up and down, square wave style.

You can make sound with a pulse width modulator while with a potentiometer you can't.

exvcept you can't get the same amount of power you can only put out around 5 volts with the 555, unless you put it in series with an amp, nevermind

no a potentiometer reduces voltage by producing heat. this pulses a unchanged voltage.
