∞∞∞ Set on the table the fragrant mignonettes, Bring in the last red asters inside , and let us speak again of love, As once we did in May.
Give me your hand, so that I may press it Secretly, I care not if others see; Just give me one of your sweet glances, As once you did in May
Every grave today is decked with fragrant bloosoms, One day in the year belongs to the dead: Come to my heart, so that I may hold you again, As once I did in May.

it's up for interpretation, but the words do suggest that either the singer or the beloved is dead. It's kind of fun singing it as the ghost.
However, you can imagine it with someone who is happy and has moved on, maybe found love again, but chooses to remember the lost love once a year. that makes it bittersweet.
Lovely. Really gives the lie to the idea that Te Kanawa couldn't be expressive when she felt whatever it was she was singing. Sometimes she didn't feel it .. but what a gorgeous voice.
I wanted to "thumbs up" this comment, but I can't! I love Kiri singing Strauss lieder, it's some of her best! Her and Georg, simply magic! You are right about her beautiful luscious voice. I don't understand how anybody could not think this is the most beautiful voice on the planet!

Give me your hand, so I may fondly hold it. If others see it, I don't care what they think...
At Halloween, the veil between the worlds thins and your loved ones can be with you again. That's what the song is about.
