December 2004 The women of Chitral in the Hindu Kush in Pakistan are traditionally kept out of sight and out of power. But the arrival of a foreign fashion line is changing everything.
The clothing line, Carvana, is empowering dozens of local women giving them a market for their traditional sewing skills. Many now earn more than their husbands. And it's not only women benefiting from the work -- there's even a former Taliban member working for Carvana.

the thing you call barbarism and tribalism has saved us so far from western pollutted society which is under social crisis. Where moms and daughters sleep with strangers. Where there are psychological diseases. Where there are the largest number of suicides and where people aren't happy despite of the scientific progress.
I think the girls are doing a great job for these communities. The locals are paid sustainable wages they wouldn't otherwise have. I have traveled fairly extensively through the Korakoram and Hindu Kush and have seen the economic despair of some of these wonderful cultures up close. Great report, thanks very much.
the pakistanis are who? backwards people. why? they're thugs and they don't know they toe the line of the thug. who the chief thug? the western bankers. Are these people loyal to what? to power. so who control them? those people are kept down by the thugs.
I think if they really wanted to help- they would find a way to help them develop their own and be incorporated. I know they have the contacts but still-... teach a man to fish...know what I mean.
@lethel4444 it's an evil world. they know what is good and they do what is bad. they are evil and they will die. the jew doesn't want anyone with freedom. they are evil on all levels. those women have enough money for what? they're slaves. if they were shown freedom they wouldn't come back.
I agree with nVei06 still they cannot shake up the system too much i suppose they are paying according to thier countrie's standard of money? Whatever. I do think 150 dollars for ONE MONTH of tedious hand stithced art work.. well you could up it a ALSO- i think they should not utter one word of complaint- aobut isolation- this is what they got themselves in to.
Whats wrong with it? at least our women work hard to earn bread and butter. They do not work for xxx films like western women. . . . . Pakistani zindabad...
Mr. Ameertron, I do not know what you mean by backward. Let me tell you something. Chitral has nothing to do with sindhi or panjabi people. Chitralis are originally from Greece who came to asia as part of the Alexader the great troops. They speak chitrali language. They race is different from Paki sindhi and panjabi. The main reason you do not see their men on the street is becasue the muslim culture imposed on them. It ironic that you call these people backward. backward in what?
I'm from Pakistan and lemme remind everyone that some cities, like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi aren't as backwards as Chitral and the northern regions. That being said, I'm proud of these two ladies for giving these women something to do, rather then letting them stay tucked away in their homes, being subservient to men their whole lives. Reading these comments, some of you lot need to get your heads out of your assses. This is the 21'st century. Grow up.
