After former journalist, Amelia, is killed while investigating her first story in years, Laura her best friend from college and Meredith, her former journalism professor make the resolution to retrace her steps and solve her murder. The clues lead to a story Amelia is working on involving suspicious property sales in the small community of Cedar Grove - residents were lied to and bullied into selling their homes.

Unfortunately, Amelia's notes are cryptic and confusing, and her best source Carl turns up dead. The women press on, despite the resistance of the local police force and begin to pick up Amelia's trail. Their investigation leads them to Jack, a real estate agent and Peter a wealthy developer. There is no apparent connection between them- until Laura uncovers the mysterious events that brought the two men together, over twenty years ago, events that affect Peter's new multimillion dollar development deal about to break ground. Jack stands to make a fortune from Peter's deal and he'll do what it takes to make sure nobody gets in his way.

After Laura is almost killed by an unmarked car and Meredith gets a bomb scare in her office, they resolve not to give up. But all is not as it seems. In the face of more threats, intimidation and their own doubts, Laura must get Peter to help her overcome Jack's best efforts to stop the truth from coming out - and exposing the most shocking scandal this small town has ever seen.
