Love Natsuki and Toru. I am obsessed with these two... They are my new Aki and D-Boy.
I am very pleased with the way this turned out. Make that extremely pleased. The song also worked a lot better than I had expected! Thanks, Becca! Though I was tempted to use the Cýndí Läµpër version cuz I wub her. :P

I'm not sure how you could have been fooled. In the short segment where you can see Aoi in the first episode, her hair is covering her face, giving her a look like Sadako from the ring. I guess you were confused because Yomi is standing next to Toru in that scene?

Oh? Well you're right about character illustration sheet part (they're clearly diffrent, even the hair is way diffrent), but in the anime itself on the 5 sec flashback it was enough to fool me, though.

I'm afraid you're mistaken. Even in Aoi's original character sheet where the details of her face are visible, her facial structure is very different from Yomi, as far the difference in anime characters goes that is.

Aoi was Toru's girlfriend that he shot at point blank range because Mitogawa had placed a sesshoseki on her.

@Kevin13581 Yomi was present with Toru at the time of Aoi's death, but it is never explained how or why they are together at that time. Other than that, the only time they're shown together is when Yomi destroys the team.

You answered your own first question. But I'm going to assume the question you really wanted to ask was "Why do they only appear in the first episode and then die?"
No they do not appear in the manga.
The answer is simply that it was a ploy to dramatize the first appearance of Yomi and create a lot of stir among the viewers. Very unfortunate considering they were extremely enjoyable characters for the short time they were around.
