The Moan is the third release and first EP by the American blues-rock duo The Black Keys, released in 2004. This is their last release for Alive Records, as the band switched to Fat Possum Records to publish their 2003 LP Thickfreakness the previous year.

The title track for The Moan was also made available on a vinyl 7" SP (ALIVE0047-1), with "Have Love Will Travel (Radio Edit)" as the B-side (Alive Records). The original cut of "Have Love Will Travel", which is a Sonics through Richard Berry cover, was first released on Thickfreakness. "Heavy Soul (alternate)" is a reprise of The Big Come Up version. The remaining track is "No Fun", a Stooges cover.

  • I have a different version of moaning at midnight by the wolf from the one here on U-tube. The guitar riff is identical i can assure you. The words are from poor boy blues

  • @stugibb20 this sounds completely different to me as a whole

  • IT SOUNDS BETTER THEN VOODOO CHILE!

  • @stugibb20 You must be correct for I don't know much about "poor boy blues" or "moaning at midnight". Now you peaked my curiosity to go and check these both numbers and find out for myself. Thx a mil for your info. Keep rocking'!

  • @libanicedrus Not so much a take on Voodoo Chile, it's the riff from "poor boy blues" and "moanin at midnight" by Howlin Wolf :)

  • It doesn't just sound like Voodoo Child. It is in fact The Black Keys' take on Voodoo Child in my opinion. I don't know about any original Blues song where this song originates, but then again, maybe Voodoo Child is an old Blues song take after all. To me, it's a beautiful interpretation of VC. Raw, pure, hard hitting, groovy, and haunting. Love it.

  • sounds a little like the voodoo child riff

  • Hmm - the Black Keys changed the title, cut most of the words, and added a turn-around. When most people make changes to a song like that they credit the original composer, or say "traditional," but when the Black Keys do it they credit themselves.

This is a very old song called Poor Boy Blues.

When Howlin Wolf did this song, the line was "I'm a poor boy a long way from home." (watch?v=KUlSSobQ460)

Of course Howlin Wolf also credited himself (as C. Burnett).

  • @MrSoulchild101 oh ok , thank you dude (:
