Heavy rains destroyed railway retaining walls of more than 36,000 cubic meters at 57 sections and over 280 meter-long railway bridge beams. Thirteen electric transformer substations for railway were flooded, more than 1,160 poles for railway communication and some 120 concrete poles destroyed or collapsed. The natural disaster has paralyzed the passenger and freight transport of railway. In particular, scores of kilometer-long rail-roadbeds between the Jisu and Sokthangonchon railway stations were carried away and rail-roadbeds of thousands of cubic meters in the section between Kithan and Jongbong railway stations were washed away or covered with nearly 10,000 cubic meters of stones and earth. Landslides destroyed over 120 structures in the section between Phyongsan and Jongbong railway stations. The investigation into damage is being continued. Meanwhile, a work for healing the damage is also being vigorously pushed ahead throughout the country. The Ministry of Railway preferentially provides cement, steel and other necessary materials to the rehabilitation sites in collaboration with the Cabinet and the State Planning Commission. Commanding offices have been set up on the spots in Yangdok County of South Phyongan Province and Kangwon Province stricken hard by the flood to vigorously conduct the rehabilitation of the damaged rail-roadbeds and railway bridges. Along with railway working people, the people in the flood-stricken areas have rushed to the rehabilitation sites. The damaged railway roadbeds and structures are being restored to the original state one by one by their devoted efforts.
