I didn't realize how downright dirty this song is until I read the lyrics.
This has got to be the filthiest, bawdiest, befouled, unhygienic piece of smut vulgar I have ever fallen in love with.

who really cares if its a shanty a jig or a waltz its amazing music that sadly has been forgotten its real music played by real people thats all i going to say long live the pogues and shane mcgowan a true music legend

hultonclint is right this is not strictly a shanty. Strictly speaking it's not but it's pretty good. Sailors certainly played jigs and reels as well, but shanties were usually used to provide a rhythm for hauling and pulling and actions that got the men to pull at the same time and in time.

this is a very fine jig... but it is not a shanty anymore than it is a waltz or foxtrot for that matter.
-
@DuckyKAOS you are a sad sad cunt why don't you fuck off and moan about the pogues - and the band played waltzing matilda - not being a real waltz song...dickhead
-
This is not a shantie. There is no call and response. The pull would be on the last beat of the response. This is a jig and in no way a sailing song it could be classifide as a Fo'c's'le song

Lovely tune!

@MasterMarf A part of this is the kesh jig

"I met with Bill James we fought over crusts
He called me a whore and I booted his crutch
Then we shared out the jack and we thought it a treat
The compliments pass when the quality meet"
100% unabridged fucking genius.

Who cares if it's not technically a shanty, let's just concentrate on the fact it's a fucking awesome song!
