Muscadines are a native American species of grape very popular in the south. John Marshall, owner of www.goGardenNow.com and Marshall's Farm, a "you-pick" vineyard in Georgia shows how to get started pruning the vines.

  • Is the method you describe for pruning muscadines much different from your average grape vine? I have both.

I just pruned my 'regular' grape vines back completely and now I'm wondering if I did the wrong thing. I will prune my muscadine vine as you described here.

  • @caveatemp Bunch grape vines are usually trained to and pruned on different systems than muscadines. There are several systems, each with different requirements. But bunch grapes are usually pruned leaving 3 to 5 buds per spur.

  • @goGardenNow Thanks. I pruned my bunch grapes all the way back so I guess I won't get grapes this year on them. I was foolish not to do a little research before pruning.

  • very helpful thank you
