Rachmaninoff influenced 20th century music with his post-romantic style. A extraordinary pianist himself, he transformed the dry poetic etude study piece into a master colorful palette.

The Etude Tableaux Opus 39 No 1 is one of his many etudes. Set in a dark, mysterious tone of C minor, this technically challenging piece contains mostly alternate broken chords, octaves, arpeggios and shivering tremelos. While it may intimidate some pianists, those who scale this piece can enjoy a sense of accomplishment.

Compared to the infamous Rach III (Rachmaninoff's Piano concerto #3 in D minor), this piece contains certain difficult elements. I'm hoping to use this piece to prepare myself to master the Rach III. I have already played the first movement, and the third is now my goal.

Rachmaninoff is undoubtedly one of my favorite composers.

  • I apologise if I upset anyone.. but Rach would find this appauling. You are just playing the notes, not the music. There is no progression, no emotion, no structure, and the story is not there.. this makes no sense at all and is a complete mess. If you are going to play Rachmaninoff, you must let go of your humanity.

  • Super impressive!!!

  • just curious...how long did it take for you to learn this?

  • @Randalaos and what story would that be?

  • My fingering for the first part is 315 215 215 315 215 315 214 315.

I think that for the first arpeggio, Ab, C, C, 215 is inappropriate, as you would play the chord itself 315, no? :)

hope that helps you smooth it out a little bit.

  • AWESOME !!!!

  • Hi, I've been learning this piece and can play the notes but getting smoothness in the right hand, so that the phrases sound as they should, is really hard. My RH fingering (first bar of piece) is 215 215 215 215 215 215 213 214. Is this appropriate? I will keep trying to smooth things out.

  • I am sure that you have improved your musicanship since you posted this video or it could have just been the sound quality but this etude doesn't sound like a piece but rather an exercise like czerny or hanon. I don't feel the musicality of this "deep" Rachmaninoff work.

  • AMAZING!
