March 1998
Following the collapse of the Berlin wall, freedom of religion has flourished in Eastern Europe and no more so than in Poland. Many young Poles are now searching for their roots and finding them firmly embedded in the Jewish community. With this new resurgence of Judaism there are problems - not least the attitude of a country that harbours anti-Semitic views, despite being the focus of the world's conscience after Auschwitz. Rabbi Michael Schudrich has been entrusted with imparting his knowledge to this fledgling Jewish community as well encouraging tolerance and understanding from the rest of society. In Warsaw's new Jewish primary school these worries are certainly not apparent as 92 little 'ambassadors' recite Hebrew songs with youthful vigour. Sombre stone memorials dominate the landscape but there's a sparkle of Jewish spirit emanating from a tragic past.

  • It's really awesome that there is this kind of revival in Poland because our country has a history of tollerance and acceptance. Before the war Jewish people were an integral part of the Polish society. We lived together, my granny had lots of Jewish girlfriends. Unfortunately there are scumbags nowadays who are neo nazi wannabies and try to take their stupid inferiority complex out on other people but believe me, Jewish people are an integral part of Poland and it's history. Shalom!

  • I am a Polish Jew and I like Poland. Unfortunately, I live in USA, but I always try to explain misconceptions about Poland to Americans.

  • @zentrallondon " anti-Semitism was everywhere in Europe in 19/20 century, due to nationalism movement - Zionism is one of them" Just for starters, you should research WHY and what provoked the movement of Zionism in the FIRST place...hmmm and Nationalism is not one of them... and oh, I wish it was ONLY 19/20 century, especially in Russia at those Czarist and Greek Orthodox fanatics!
