Developed in New Zealand by Ian Saywell, this is a remarkable device. It
is a simple chuck-attachment for any quality power drill of at least 14 volts, and preferably two speeds. (Lower-powered drills are not adequate.) The front of the device has a fixed circular inner blade over which the outer circular blade oscillates. The cutting action is smooth and fast, taking only 3 or 4 seconds to run up the tail. Even dirty dag-ends feed smoothly over the trimmer. Pre-cutting the tail's switch is not necessary. This is a sturdy, but precision tool, that will withstand considerable use. Gear oil is introduced at the start of use, and after each 50-100 tails, through an external lubrication point provided. The cutter tension is adjustable. Replacement blade set is available, or a blade replacement service is available. A neck strap is provided to allow the operator to be hands free between cows. Trimming can easily be accomplished during milking. See www.tailwell.com for more information
I would like to offer my admiration for the development of a product that not only solves a practical problem (cleanliness for the milking process), with a humane solution which does not involve painful tail-docking or limiting a cow's ability to swat off flies. This product gets a thumbs up from me for it's positive welfare associations.
