He has run from the start on a platform of unity and reconciliation to the point where he disappointed some black civil rights groups. He delivered one of the most elegant, tolerant and best-argued speeches on the vexed issue of race ever delivered to a US audience. By campaigning as an exemplary American, rather than a black American, he has cast himself as a potential president for all his countrymen. Above all, though, Barack Obama has enthused not only Americans with his rhetoric of hope and calls for change. Already he has achieved what is too often seen as impossible in modern politics: he has galvanised that vast constituency of young voters and the hitherto disengaged, even as he also showed immense discipline and cool professionalism. If doubts persist about America's readiness for a black president, doubts about his personal readiness have fallen away.
