This is a video of the wind storm that affected SE Michigan around 5 AM EST. My weather station recorded a 53 MPH wind gust. There were widespread 60 to 70 MPH gusts across the area. You can see tons of power flashes in the distance. It looks like lightning...but it's not. 230,000 people lost power during this event. We didn't thankfully.

  • I live in Southgate just northwest of Fort St and Eureka and the wind woke me up at 5am also.

I really thought the flash's were lightning flashes! I just crawled back in bed.

  • Yeah, alot of people thought it was a strong thunderstorm coming into the region...but it was just a cold front with a thin line of showers...or drizzle for that matter. All the flashes in the sky are power lines arcing.

  • good. did your crossing signal fall, or did you take it down so it didn,t break, or is it still up?

  • It was fine. I left it up as usual. It did have me worried...since it blew harder than I expected...and the gate was swaying pretty bad...but it held up great. I'm suprised we didn't loose power. An area of Trenton, MI has been out since 5 AM EST Sunday...and they are still out as of 11 PM EST Tuesday!

  • WOW!!!! I love these kind of things!!! :) Early morning weather events in winter for some reason seem to inspire me. (even though I live in Las Vegas)

  • thanks for the responce. i just checked my email today. the last time i checked it was before you sent that response

  • THat was an amazing morning, it fuelt like a hurricane or a tornado going through. Very nice wind event.Just amazing from calm to such a high wind and it lasted for a while too.

  • That was quite a storm for all of michigan. You got the worst of the storm. Here in Traverse City we lost a lot of snow with the rain and fog and thunderstorms before turning to snow and wind early sunday morning. That sure was a mess anywhere you go in this state.

  • We just had something like this last night, in Long Island, New York where i live, except it was only about 20-30 wind speed.
