he was also the first black man 2 get an oscar :D love this movie its the best hopefully no1 thinks the tarbaby is racist like sumpeeps do cus its not
a black man doing a minstrel role directly supporting the arguemnts for slavery & discrimination. Progress?
His lyrics come from a version of "Zip Coon" blackface song; blacface calls whites superior.
He says that the south after Civil War is just fine - so where's the kkk, the thousands of hangings, the re-instutted slavery of blacks under prison labour?
If you think that the "Lost Cause" mythology created by Confederate soldiers (repeated here) is progress, then ur deeply indoctrinated.
it should be noted, that James Baskett (Uncle Remus) was not just the first black actor Disney ever cast, but the first actor Disney cast period. he was even given an Honorary Oscar after the film premiered -- being black disqualified him from a nomination for Best Actor
not exactly Bill Cosby bought the rights to the "Our Gang" shorts (what we know better as "The Little Rascals") because he found Buckwheat to be extremely offensive while the NAACP originally protested "Song of the South", their opinion seemed to soften sometime in the '80s and recognize the film for it's groundbreaking art direction the film has never been outright "banned" -- the suits at Disney are just more concerned with not getting sued if they were to release it
I remember this from when I was two years old and I have never forgotten this song! WoW! I don't even remember what the movie was about...... BTW.... I'm 25!
