an impressionistic montage of stills, projected video, underwater footage and an intimate phone conversation, this deeply personal film was crafted as a gift for the filmmaker's mother, who has struggled all her life with anorexia and bulimia. (© hope hall 1999)

  • Thank you for sharing such a personal video with the public. I was moved to tears upon watching this - feeling so much empathy for you and your Mom. I am sorry your family has suffered through your Mother's lifelong ed struggle. (i've been in treatment for 20 years for an ed - can't even imagine trying to have a family of my own!) In sharing this, you may help others better understand their own loved ones' struggles as well. Thank you. Debbie

  • you're welcome, debbie. i can't say that i intended to share this with anyone else besides my classmates, who i had to show it to, and my mother, for whom i made it. now that it has taken on a life of its own, i am amazed and honored by its effects not only on my own family but on the community of families of those with eating disorders and mental illness. thank you right back, your words are such an encouragement, hope

  • Wow.

  • Your video does not get any exposure, and it should. I'm still out here alive. I watch your video every few weeks. I have 2 grown daughters, & I always wonder how they feel.

  • You are a sweetheart & your Mom is blessed to have you as her daughter!

  • Amazing, Phenomenal Video, Hope! Wow, I'm crying! That was spectacular!

  • wow, i am astonished at your notes. thank you for writing. yes, my mom is still alive, and no, she has never recovered. my sister and i are now her guardians and we have her under basic care, at least. that is a big change, and we are very grateful for it. she refuses treatment, though, and that is heartbreaking.

i wish you all the best, and i hope we can keep in touch, hope

  • its too bad that rating are disabled because that was beautifully done!

  • I am so thankful to have found this video. I am a Mother of 3, & I am very close to my grown daughter of whom I hope this can help express what I cannot say.

  • WOW....this is so original and so sad...

  • very strong work

  • thanks for showing this-glad u put it up. it shows what an ED can/will do if taken into motherhood.

its hearbreaking to hear your mother had shock-treatment & didnt recieve help for anorexia.

your mothers had anorexia for many years so i can understand that the woman u see is more anorexia then your mum. its like part of you dulls when the EDs there.

my words arent false ive had eating problems since 8yo, developed anorexia 16yo. im now 23 and have bulimia but working diligently to recover
