I'm curious, why not use a pneumatic cylinder? Is the air flowing through the bolt?

interesting design... I'm curious, how did the gun work at Defcon? I was there, my team name was ASIMOV1. I realize now who you were at defcon, but I didn't know then.
I'm interested in the idea of a pneumatic gun though, after seeing how pitiful my airsoft guns were :)

Our gun worked great at the event. It was incredibly accurate, and hit very hard (you may have seen us denting the targets and knocking a lot of paint off on the right side). We're working on a new gun for next year and it will definitely be pneumatic again. Eventually our goal is to get a gun that shoots airsoft pellets so hard that event staff will ask us to leave...only then will it be good enough :-)

and what is this supposed to do?

The servo pulls back the plunger to load the pellet into the path of the air. It then pushes it forward to block off the loading hole, and in the same motion the servo pushes a switch that triggers an air solenoid. If you look on the left side of the inside cavity, you can see a hole threaded in. That is the air supply that is routed through the solenoid. So in one motion, the servo loads the pellet, isolates the ammo from the air supply, and triggers the solenoid to shoot.
