The Crystal Lake Recreation Area has a section of campgrounds to the North called the Deer Flats Group Campgrounds which sport extra large camp sites complete with large fire rings, numerous tables per each camp site, and room for large groups of people to stay together.
One of the hiking trails one reaches from Deer Flats is Sunset Ridge, a short half-mile loop that is suitable for families who want to hike in the evenings in the dark and look out across the many miles off in to the lights of the cities far below.
The Curve Fire of 2001 impinged upon Deer Flats and Sunset Ridge however foscheck and water drops by fixed wing and helicopters managed to save the campgrounds and all of Sunset Ridge nature trail.
Deer Flats is also the upper, Northern most trailhead for the Lost Ridge hiking trail which goes through pristine forest and meets up with Lake Road neat the lake about 1.5 or so miles to the South.
