Here's an oddity. I attached audio from a surviving test record at the end of this clip giving the number a slightly different approach. Enjoy.

  • 1:53 did i just see what i think i saw? god i love pre-code movies. yes, that's shirley ross (bob hope's early leading lady) singing in the second half

  • Thanks for the invaluable info about Shirley Ross. The fog is finally lifting! ;)

  • STJN00,

Interesting test record, an extension to the production number. I never knew that existed. I like it better with the "test" music over the last 1/3 and the jazzy ending.

  • Yes! It's alot jazzier than the movie version. And the trumpeter at the end really gives a performance. I love it! I don't know if the number actually was longer at first and then cut. I'm not even sure it's the same singer on the test record.

  • PRE-CODE ALERT: If any of you out there has a copy of this entire film, listen closely to Lupe Velez's Hispanic rant right before they cut to this very number (She's angry with Durante for not inviting her). At the very end of her diatribe, she sneaks in, in English, a distinct vulgarity... ("piece of ____!")... Somehow it got by the censors, but I swear, I'm not imagining it... Check it out!

  • Cool - where did you find the test record? Has it been released commercially?

  • The best!

  • Yes---the real HOLLYWOOD PARTY// Wonderful reconstruction, great music, and "SCANDALS" star Frances Williams is outstanding! LOVE those pre-code moments!! Thanks//

  • Somebody really speaking on the phone ! I usually just hear is just a recording. I don't like it. I prefer a live operater.

  • I wish the number had been longer in the released version, as it sure was one of the better ones in the whole picture. As I recall it went through MANY changes before getting to the theaters. There's also a little clip of the number during the finale at the film's end. Did you know that the blond singer Frances Williams introduced "As Time Goes By" on Broadway a full decade before the film CASABLANCA?

  • Would it be possible to post the finale of Hollywood Party? Unlike most movies of the time, it had the complete credits at the end--and a beautifully-recorded orchestral reprise of "I've Had My Moments."

  • Can I go to the party????
